Our alums are the heart of our region, using their passion and education to build our community. One thing we always say at the Foundation is that when we invest in our students, they will in turn invest in our community. Bri Fields is a shining example of this idea. Born and raised here in Spokane County, Bri went to elementary school on base at Fairchild Air Force base, where her mom was a civilian employee. Then she went to middle and high school in Medical Lake. She got interested in agriculture in high school, joining the Future Farmers of America and even entering leadership competitions. “I was really dedicated to it, even though I was allergic [to the lambs I raised],” Bri said. Bri even ran for state office for FFA a few times. “I didn’t win, but I loved meeting people from other small towns.” Getting an agricultural education in her areas of interest was tricky, but Bri found the right program at Spokane Community College. She enjoyed the agriculture business program, especially when she got to meet other folks when she traveled for conventions. When she graduated and transferred to Montana State University’s College of Agriculture, she said it was her education at SCC that helped her get ahead. “Many of the classes I took at SCC met the requirements I needed at Montana,” Bri said. After she graduated, she decided to return home to Spokane, and she was glad she did. “It allowed me to get more involved and see how our city is growing.” Now she supports that community through her writing. Bri is a contributor for the Black Lens News, nonprofit news organization published daily online and monthly in print. Previously, Bri worked with SIMBA as their Event Coordinator, where she gets to be out in the community and share resources for local businesses. She loved getting to be involved with the famers markets and sharing support across the community. Bri didn’t just find an education at SCC. She found a way to turn her love of connecting with others into meaningful work in our area. We’re proud of all she’s accomplished! Photo courtesy of Maker & Made.
